Yesterday, the senate voted final passage of HB2677, which repeals Arizona’s draconian 1864 abortion ban. The Governor is expected to sign the bill today. But what’s next, why can’t we stop now, and how do we ensure access is secure?
Our policy advisor, Jodi Liggett, sums it up best:
- Big victory, but just step one.
- We still have to get the court, by any number of means, to delay implementation of its decision as this bill won’t take effect until 90 days after the end of legislative session. We don’t yet know when session will end.
- THEN, the AAA ballot measure must qualify this summer. Keep collecting signatures and turn in your petitions.
- The ballot measure must survive any legal challenges, and it MUST BE approved by voters in November.
By this fall, if we all continue to work together, there will truly be reproductive freedom for Arizona!
TURN IN PETITIONS: Get them in NOW!
May is a critical month to get petitions completed and turned in. As the summer heat picks up and travels begin, it will only get harder to get signatures.
Make it a priority to finish up your sheets. Have sheets that are filled or as complete as you feel you can get them? Get them notarized and turned in this weekend! Don’t delay.
